Opening Prescott’s first ophthalmology practice in 1961, Dr. David Rummel, was the first ophthalmologist to care for Arizona patients north of Phoenix. For more than 40 years, we have offered the most exceptional eye care and surgery available. As our reputation has grown, so has the area that we serve. Today, new patients are referred to us from throughout Northern Arizona. Still, our primary objective is to care for the people of Yavapai County, AZ.
Patients receive personal attention throughout every aspect of care—from regular examinations to sophisticated microsurgery. As professionals in small-incision, no suture cataract surgery, and other surgical procedures, our physicians perform the most advanced techniques.
As a service to our patients, we invite many sub-specialists to our office on a regular basis. These include specialist for the care and treatment of the cornea, the retina, early signs to advanced stages of glaucoma, and pediatric eye problems.

Our team, which includes David Rummel, M.D. and his sons, R. Mark Rummel, M.D., Ph.D., and John Rummel, M.D. along with James B. Arthur, M.D., and Steven Meyers, O.D. provide eye care of the highest quality to patients of all ages. Known as Rummel Eye Care and Rummel Optical, we offer convenient locations in Prescott and Prescott Valley. We believe that going to see a doctor should be convenient relaxing, and our offices are designed to create a comfortable atmosphere.
Certified Staff & Equipment
All Staff at Rummel Eye CareStaff Members and ophthalmic assistants, technicians, and technologists are certified by the Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology to provide the finest professional care. The diagnostic instruments we utilize in our facilities are state-of-the-art.
For patient comfort and convenience, we provide on-site outpatient surgery in our own ambulatory surgery suite in Prescott. We also perform surgery, when desirable, at the Prescott Out-Patient Surgery Center and Yavapai Regional Medical Center.
W. David Rummel, M.D.
Dr. David Rummel is currently retired but still plays an integral part in the philosophy of patient care. Dr. Rummel a Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a fellow member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a former board member of the Civil Aviation Medical Association. He is a Past President of the Arizona Ophthalmological Society.
He has taught at the Ophthalmology Department at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico, and at the Noor Eye Institute in Kabul, Afghanistan. Dr. Rummel earned his medical degree at Hahnemann University College of Medicine in Philadelphia and served his residency in ophthalmology at Ohio State University Hospital. He is a staff physician at Yavapai Regional Medical Center.
R. Mark Rummel, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Mark Rummel is a Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Rummel is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Arizona Ophthalmological Society, and several other medical associations. Dr. Rummel specializes in small-incision, suture-less cataract surgery and surgery for other eye conditions.
He earned his medical degree at the University of Arizona College of Medicine and served his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Arizona Medical Center. He earned a doctorate Ph.D. degree in health systems from Walden University, Institute for Advanced Studies, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Rummel is a staff physician and consultant at Yavapai Regional Medical Center. He resides in Prescott with his wife, Carol and two daughters who are nurses.
John H. Rummel, M.D.
Dr. John Rummel is a Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Arizona Ophthalmological Society. Dr. Rummel specializes in small-incision, suture-less cataract surgery and surgery for other eye conditions.
He is an Aviation Medical Examiner for the FAA and a Col. and Wing Commander with the Arizona Air National Guard. After completing medical training at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, he served his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Arizona Medical Center.
Dr. Rummel served a general medical internship at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and an internal medicine internship at the Veterans™ Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls. He is a staff physician and consultant at Yavapai Regional Medical Center. He resides in Prescott with his wife, Roni.
James B. Arthur, M.D.
Dr. Arthur is a Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He specializes in small-incision, suture-less cataract surgery, and other ocular surgery procedures. Dr. Arthur earned his medical degree at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. He served his internship at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center and his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Southern California Department of Ophthalmology and the Estelle Doheny Eye Foundation.
In addition to Arizona, Dr. Arthur, in the past has been licensed to practice ophthalmology in California, New York, and Pennsylvania. Before moving to Prescott in 1997, Dr. Arthur was in private practice in Pennsylvania and New York. He is currently a staff physician at Yavapai Regional Medical Center.
Steven M. Meyers, O.D.
Dr. Meyers is certified to provide eye care in the field of Optometry. In addition to performing general vision care, his greatest interest is in contact lens services/treatment and counseling for low vision patients. Dr. Meyers is Arizona State certified to prescribe medications for the treatment of ocular conditions. He has provided eye care in Prescott and Prescott Valley for the past 21 years.
Dr. Meyers earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Visual Sciences with honors and His Doctor of Optometry degree at Pacific University, Forest Grove, Oregon. He served internships at Pacific University and at Seattle Indian Health Center, Seattle, Washington. Dr. Meyers resides in Prescott Valley with his wife, Susie, (and their daughter).
